When using wire nuts to make your connections it is important that you do not pretwist the wires before attaching the wire nut. This may result in a loose connection. Within this loose connection the electrical current will arch from one wire to another producing heat creating a potential fire hazard.
The proper way to make this connection is to place wires together keeping all the strand of wire at even lengths and twist the wire nut gently. You will feel the nut start grabbing the strands as you tighten. After the wire nut is secure, give the wires a tug to make certain that the connection will not come apart.
